Downtown Acton News – Josey Bonnette, Manager

Acton BIA Manager Retires:

It is with a little sadness and a tiny bit of a heavy heart that I am announcing to you my RETIREMENT!  I have thought long and hard about my decision and feel it is the right time in my life.  I have been the Acton BIA Manager for 14+ years and have enjoyed every minute!  It isn’t a job it is my life.

I will miss you all, but I will still be around volunteering and going to events with Mayor Rick.  Thank you so much for your support over the years. This isn’t ‘goodbye’ but I will see you soon.  My last official day is March 31, 2015.  The Annual General Meeting will be my last ‘official’ duty as your Acton BIA Manager.

We have seen many changes over the past 14 years and I am proud to have been a part of it.  In closing, please come to the AGM and you can meet your new Acton BIA Manager.  He or she will start on March 15 and work with me to help with the transition.

Acton BIA Annual General Meeting:

Tuesday, March 31 at 7:00 pm at the Acton Town Hall Centre located at 19 Willow Street North

This is an election year so if you know someone in the Acton BIA membership or YOU would like to run for a Board Position please read the following procedures below:


It is the responsibility of the Acton BIA member to register their voting delegate before the election process begins.  The names of those Board members continuing their term must appear on the ballot.  A voting delegate must make nominations from the floor with a seconder.  If desired, the Chair for the purpose of counting ballots may appoint one or more scrutineers (who need not be members,).  Only one delegate per business/property can be nominated for election at any one time.

There are currently 7 Board Members, 1 appointed THH council representative and 1 staff person.

Businesses on the move:

The MacKinnon Family Funeral Home Inc. and the Blue Springs Funeral Home have been purchased by Gilbert MacIntyre and Son from Guelph.  They will be amalgamated into one business. The Business will be called MacKinnon Family Funeral Home Ltd. and will operate from 55 Mill Street East, Acton. Laura Vanderleest who has worked with Bob and Margaret MacKinnon for the past 6 years will be the managing director.  We wish Bob & Margaret MacKinnon and Ian Passmore all the best in their retirement and new adventures.

The Clay Oven is now scheduled to open April 1. They have had permit and structural issues that have been resolved and work has commenced as of February 2.

Ed’s In & Out Variety Store will be closing at the end of February.  Ed’s In & Out Variety has been in business since I was a teenage back in the ‘60’s!  They will be missed but our best wishes go out to them on their new adventures.

Reg Marsh & Associates has relocated to old Achilles Mazda Building at the east end of Acton across from The Beer Store.  Reg has outgrown his location in downtown Acton and his new location is providing him with much needed space, parking and handicap accessibility.

Upcoming Events

1. Acton Farmers’ Market – opening day Thursday, June 4 on Willow St. S. From 3 – 7 pm

2. Canada Day Concert in the Park – Wednesday, July 1 6 – 9 pm followed by Fire Works!

3. Leathertown Festival – Sunday, August 9 11 am to 5 pm.

Councillor’s Comments, Clark Somerville:

A Big Thank you to Josey Bonnette who has decided to retire after 15 years of dedication to improving, promoting and hard work with the Acton BIA.  Josey has spent long hours working with you to help promote your business.  In fact we have gone from having 2 events downtown to 8!  All designed to get people downtown!

 At the Winter Carnival it was great to see everyone out enjoying the games and events.  It started off with the dance and was topped off by the Chili Contest at the old Town Hall.  It was great to see  Starlight Café win first prize!  Drop in and see Chris and try the chilli! Prospect Park provides a 

great anchor for us to use to attract people downtown.

You may have noticed that Town staff has replaced more sidewalk.  We were able to secure more money allocated to sidewalk replacement in the downtown area.  A program that is to replace the familiar red brick ones.  The interlocking stone sidewalk was one of the first projects ever done by the Acton BIA over 30 years ago.  The bricks are no longer available and due to their age make maintenance very difficult.  It will make the sidewalks more even and uniform as they are replaced.  The goal is to have a block section done each year.

Halton Region work coming up on Willow Street.  They have 

committed to keeping any closures to a minimum and will have signage up to direct people to the open businesses. 

It is always a major project to replace water and waste water mains.  I thank everyone for their patience as the work gets underway.

Message from the Chair, Dana Selby:

This winter arrived with a vengeance it seems and I would like to take the opportunity on behalf of the Acton BIA Board to wish everyone a safe, healthy and prosperous 2015.   We started off the New Year on the right foot, with another successful Winter Carnival, thanks to the dedicated efforts of our service groups, sponsors and volunteers.  This event has run for 4 years now and just continues to get better each and every year (a big thanks to Mother Nature for providing  the beautiful sunny weather!).  

We have a great year of events planned and will be introducing the new BIA Manager at the beginning of March.  We cannot extend our thanks enough to Josey Bonnette, who will be retiring as of March 31st.  Josey has been instrumental in the growth and promotion of the Acton BIA.  Josey, your tireless efforts and enthusiasm for the betterment and beautification of the BIA will not be forgotten.  We will truly miss you and wish you a fantastic retirement. 

The Annual General Meeting is scheduled for March 31st, beginning at 7pm, at the beautiful old Town Hall and we hope to see a good turn out from the membership, as this is a voting year for our Board of Directors.  We would encourage anyone who would like to run for a position on the Board to please visit our website regarding the nomination process (
